Probate fee changes from July 2026 – what executors need to know
From 13th July 2026, the cost of applying for probate in England and Wales will increase significantly, meaning Executors and Administrators should be aware of the additional costs when administering an estate.
Probate Application Fee Increases
The fee for applying for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration will rise from £300 to £526 for estates valued over £5,000. This represents an increase of more than 75% and follows a previous fee rise in 2024.
Although the fee is normally paid from the estate, there are occasions where the Executor may need to pay the fee upfront and recover it later if there are insufficient funds immediately available.
Additional Copies Become Cheaper
There is some good news. The cost of ordering additional copies of the Grant at the time of application will reduce to £2 per copy, down from £16. However, this reduced price only applies if the copies are ordered when the probate application is submitted. Copies requested afterwards will still cost £16 each.
As banks, building societies, pension providers, insurers and other organisations often require an original sealed copy of the Grant, ordering enough copies at the outset can help avoid delays and unnecessary expense.
